I have worked as a teacher in a Further Education College, and since qualifying as a Counsellor I work in a 6th Form College and for an organisation providing support for young people and their families.
I am also currently counselling at an organisation in Southampton for addiction therapy.
I am a qualified counsellor, using a Humanistic approach based on Transactional Analysis (TA). You may be wondering what this means and, unless you are somebody that is familiar with talking therapies, this probably makes no sense! So, I will explain briefly, to give you an understanding of what this is:
There are many modalities of counselling, all of them offering a slightly different way of working with clients. My approach is relational and helps to explain why we think, feel, and behave in the way we do. It was developed by a psychiatrist named Eric Berne and is a form of psychology that examines a person’s relationships and interactions. It uses a set of conceptual tools to promote personal growth and change and can help individuals to reach their full potential, in all aspects of their life.
I also use Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) techniques to support clients alongside TA.

Within the therapeutic space I feel that it is important to offer a range of techniques. I find this particularly effective when working with younger people.
I will sometimes use creative therapy. This may not be for everyone and some people find this a rather daunting prospect. This is your space and if you feel that creative therapy isn’t for you, that is fine. However, for those that find it especially challenging to express their feelings and find talking therapies sometimes too difficult, using the imagination by working with objects or art can offer a new dimension.
This way of communicating can help convey a feeling and it is not necessary to talk in detail about painful or difficult experiences. An image or object can convey what might be otherwise be hard to say.
